Newborns and Colic: A Brief Introduction to Colic and the MAM Anti-Colic Bottle

What is colic?

Doctors diagnose colic by the rule of three:  otherwise healthy, well-fed babies that cry more than three hours a day, three days a week and for more than three weeks have the condition.  Approximately 25% of babies have colic.  Symptoms generally begin a few weeks after birth and improve by age 3-5 months.

Anecdotally, colic is described by parents as frequent periods of high-pitched, intense crying by their baby.  During these episodes, babies are inconsolable and appear extremely uncomfortable; they are often flushed, have clenched fists, curled legs, arched backs, or have tense muscles during their crying jags.   Today, many doctors acknowledge that colic is accompanied by physical pain in the baby’s gut or abdominal area.2.

What are the symptoms of colic?

Most healthy babies experience unpredictable crying bouts or periods of fussy behavior throughout development.   Babies diagnosed with colic display the following symptoms:

  • Predictable crying episodes, usually at the same time every day.  The crying may last several minutes to several hours and tends to start suddenly and for no specific reason.
  • Intense, inconsolable crying.  Cries may often be high-pitched.
  • Physical changes in posture, such as curled up legs, clenched fists or tense abdominal muscles.3

What are the possible causes of colic?

The exact cause of colic remains unclear, however experts agree that there are several contributing factors that, either by themselves or together, may contribute to the condition, including:

  • An immature digestive system.4 Muscles that support digestion may not yet be fully developed.  Newborns also lack bacterial flora (i.e. probiotics) that develop over time to help aid digestion.  These factors may explain why babies outgrow colic within a few months.
  • Acid reflux.5 The backward flow of stomach contents into the esophagus causes spitting up and physical discomfort.
  • Trapped air or gas in the intestinal track.6 Infants can swallow air while feeding, causing gas and bloating in the abdominal area.
  • Allergies or food sensitivities.7 If breastfeeding, babies can be allergic or sensitive to certain foods consumed by the mother.  If formula feeding, babies may have an intolerance or sensitivity to certain proteins or lactose.

Do you suspect your baby is suffering from colic or colic-like symptoms?

We can help. MAM Anti-Colic bottles feature a patented vented bottom designed to regulate air pressure and reduce baby’s intake of air bubbles while feeding. Research shows that MAM Anti-Colic bottles reduce colic symptoms in 80% of babies with colic.

In addition to their effectiveness in reducing colic symptoms, they are known among parents as the perfect bottles to switch between breastfeeding and bottlefeeding due to the design of the nipple. Wide at the base and made of ultra-soft silicone (the same as MAM silicone pacifier nipples), the MAM Ultra-Soft Silicone Nipple was specifically designed to closely resemble the breast and all but eliminate nipple confusion. Furthermore, we know how important time is to our MAM Moms and Dads. Eliminate time scrubbing, swabbing, brushing, boiling, etc. by simply sterilizing your anti-colic bottle in the microwave in the simple 3-minute process pictured below.

Fun Thanksgiving Crafts for Toddlers: A Guest Blog Post from Louise Wackerman of I'm Feelin' Crafty!

MAM Moms and Dads, please allow us to introduce you to a friend of ours: Louise Wackerman, Founder of I'm Feelin' Crafty! Louise, an artistic, crafty architect, mom and wife, is here with us today to share some fabulous Thanksgiving craft projects you can do with your toddler!

Louise Wackerman resized 600Louise Wackerman
Hi, I'm Louise! Thank you so much for having me! I'm excited to share a fun craft my son and I created for you and your families! This is a great project to do today or even with the whole family while you're waiting on the real turkey to cook on Thursday!

TdayTurkey-Main-ImFeelinCrafty

We call these funny little guys the Salad Spinner Ice Cream Cone Turkeys! hehehe! Or just Spinner Art Turkeys for short!

TdayTurkey-Turkeys-End-ImFeelinCrafty

We love salad spinner art and made a lot of it a while back. Then just recently my son found the spinner again and got it out and we've been loving it again! So after we were playing with it, I knew we had to incorporate this into a Thanksgiving craft. Hence the turkeys were born!

TdayTurkey-Materials-ImFeelinCrafty

What you'll need is fall colored, acrylic paints, paper plates, waffle cones, googly eyes, glue, a little bit of yellow fabric and a little bit of red fabric, and scissors! And of course a salad spinner!

TdayTurkey-Paint1-ImFeelinCrafty

We LOVE making salad spinner art! As you may be able to tell from the paint build up along the sides! We found a used, cheap one at Goodwill for our art. I don't recommend using the same one you use for your tasty salads. I've found that there's usually a good collection of used ones at our local Goodwill or thrift shop. So first you insert your plate in the spinner and add the paint. I try to get it in circles, but sometimes (most of the time) it ends up in little dots!

TdayTurkey-Paint2-ImFeelinCrafty TdayTurkey-Paint3-ImFeelinCrafty Then spin!!! The fun part! TdayTurkey-CutCones-ImFeelinCrafty

While the plates are drying, let's work on the rest of the turkey. First off, you want to, very carefully, carve a little slit in the back of the cone. They are fragile and you might loose a few cones. You just want about a 1/2" slit about 1" up from the top of the cone.

TdayTurkey-Cut-ImFeelinCrafty

Next, cut out the beak and the 'snood'. The beak is a little triangle and the snood is kinda like an mix between a l and a S.

TdayTurkey-Glue1-ImFeelinCrafty

TdayTurkey-Glue2-ImFeelinCrafty

TdayTurkey-Glue3-ImFeelinCrafty

And glue! The beak, then the snood and lastly the fun googly eyes!

TdayTurkey-CutFeathers-ImFeelinCrafty

Once the plates are dry, cut them in half with a little tab in the middle.

TdayTurkey-TailFeathers1-ImFeelinCrafty TdayTurkey-TailFeathers2-ImFeelinCrafty

Insert the plate in the back slit of the cone. It's going to want to flop around, so add a little glue and it will stand up straight!

TdayTurkey-Done-ImFeelinCrafty

You can try to make just one... But once the salad spinner is out... Good luck with just one!

TdayTurkey-Turkeys1-ImFeelinCrafty

I'll bet you'll end up with a 'rafter' (a little Turkey Day trivia for ya) of turkeys! Make as many as you want for your Thanksgiving table! How many will you make???

Oral Health During Pregnancy: Months 2 and 3

Now that you've learned about oral care in your first month of pregnancy, let's touch on some key points about your second and third months!

Pregnancy: Month 2

Baby’s Oral Development:
  • Your baby’s mouth is developing the sites where each baby tooth will eventually be formed.
  • The roof of your baby’s mouth and lips are beginning to fuse together.
  • Folic acid, found in lentils, asparagus, spinach, black beans, peanuts, orange juice, enriched grains and breads, and broccoli (and most prenatal vitamins), is an essential part of your diet at this stage. It plays a large role in reducing the risk of oral birth defects such as separations or splits in baby's lip and/or roof of the mouth.

 Mom’s Oral Health:

  • Continue to maintain your oral health through daily oral care.
  • Seek professional dental care. Professional dental care is safe during pregnancy. There is no additional risk to you or your baby to have professional teeth cleaning, x-rays, or treatment of gum disease or tooth decay during your pregnancy.  Dental care can improve your overall health and the health of your developing baby.
  • Repairing decayed teeth will decrease the number of germs that cause further tooth decay in your mouth.  This is important because if you have many tooth decay-causing germs in your mouth you are more likely to pass the germs on to your baby once the child is born.

Pregnancy: Month 3

Baby Oral Development:

  • Your baby’s tooth buds are developing inside his mouth.  The 10 tooth buds on the top arch of your baby’s mouth and 10 tooth buds on the bottom arch will eventually develop into a set of 20 baby teeth.

Mom’s Oral Health:

  • One of the most common oral conditions seen during pregnancy is gingivitis, an infection of the gums.  The combination of hormonal changes, poor oral hygiene, and increased blood flow can result in red, swollen gums that bleed easily.

                500099 fx7 resized 600

  • Removing the plaque, a sticky layer of germs along the gum line, is the key to preventing gingivitis.

Helpful Hints:

  • Use a toothbrush that has soft bristles. Angle the bristles towards the gumline and brush with a circular motion to remove the plaque.  Don’t forget to brush all surfaces: inside, outside and chewing.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque. Wrap the floss around each tooth in a c-shape and gently slide the floss up and down between your teeth.  Be sure to go beneath the gumline.

Oral Health During Pregnancy: Month 1

Preparing to become a parent is difficult enough without having to research every last thing on your own. Luckily for you, however, we're here to help! Oral care during pregnancy is often the last thing on pregnant women's minds, and we can understand why- there is just so much going on in our bodies! Between swelling feet, tender breasts, fatigue, nausea and the many, many other early pregnancy symptoms, oral care often is lost in the mix. However, properly caring for your oral health is vital during this time and should not be overlooked.

Mom’s Oral Health:

The many changes taking place throughout your pregnancy such as hormonal shifts, eating habits, and morning sickness can affect your oral health which in turn can negatively impact the health of your baby. By the end of your first month of pregnancy, your baby’s head is beginning to take shape including the foundation for your baby’s mouth, so you want to be sure to get he or she off to the best start possible.

You may be experiencing frequent morning sickness and vomiting. The stomach acids can weaken your teeth by causing your tooth enamel to lose its hardness.

To care for your oral health:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

  • Floss daily.

  • Use a fluoride mouth rinse.

  • Receive professional dental care.

Helpful Hints:

  • Eat small amounts of nutritious foods throughout the day - foods like cheese, meats, nuts, vegetables, non-sticky fruits, and popcorn.  Try to avoid snacks that cause tooth decay such as sweet, sticky or starchy foods.

  • If you have vomited, wait one hour after vomiting to brush your teeth.  Brushing after vomiting can further damage your tooth surface by the combined action of the toothbrush bristles and acid in your mouth.

  • Instead of brushing your teeth after vomiting, use a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water to rinse away the stomach acids left in your mouth.

  • Use a fluoride mouth rinse.  Not only can a fluoride mouth rinse improve the taste in your mouth but more importantly fluoride strengthens your teeth and repairs weakened teeth.

Throwing a Fabulous Baby Shower on a Budget: A Guest Blogpost from Jennifer Durbin of The Clueless Chick

MAM Moms and Dads, please allow us to introduce you to a friend of ours: Jennifer Durbin, Owner and Founder of The Clueless ChickTM, which she established in 2010 to turn her expertise in cutting through the noise and making research palatable into the ultimate Pre- to Post- Pregnancy guides. She is guest blogging with us today to help all of our lovely MAM Moms-to-Be -- and their friends-- host the best baby showers while keeping expense reasonable! Enoy and be sure to share some of your fun baby-shower-on-a-budget tips in the comments below!

Throwing a Fabulous Baby Shower on a Budget {Clueless Chick Style}:

We all love a fabulous baby shower, great food, fun games and adorable gifts, but hosting a baby shower can be stressful and expensive.  That was before you discovered these super easy ways to throw a fabulous baby shower on a budget!  It’s true, by making a few easy changes and doing a little extra planning, you can save yourself so much money you’ll be throwing a shower every weekend.

So how do you plan a baby shower on a budget that will wow all of your guests and make the mommy-to-be feel like she had the best shower ever?  There are of course the obvious money savers, like sending guests an e-vite in lieu of a formal invitation and hosting the shower at your home instead of an expensive restaurant.  But did you think of using items you already have around the house, or gifts you purchased for the mommy-to-be as decorations?

Bath Cups resized 600

Decoration Dos:

Instead of spending money on decorations you may throw away, repurpose items you already have around the house:

  • Your spring scarves or large yellow wrap make the perfect table runner

  • A large candle holder or hurricane is the perfect cake stand base

  • The baby bathtub you got for mommy-to-be can act as a cute cooler for drinks

  • Hang your MAM pacifier clips (http://www.mambaby.com/us/the-products/pacifiers/mam-love--affection-1242-11154-us.html) from your chandelier as an adorable mobile

  • Clean your little man’s dump truck and use it as a super cool chip bowl

Timely Themes:

Pick a theme for your baby shower based upon the current season or holiday to save yourself time and money hunting for favors, paper goods and decorations.  If you are lucky enough to time it right, you can take advantage of the 50% off sales after Valentine’s Day, Easter, or the 4th of July to pick up decorations, candies or party favors.  What could be cuter than a bag of heart-shaped chocolates with a “Baby Clark will be filling Jason & Kim’s heart with love on August 5th!” gift tag?

Professional DIY Tricks:

You can save money on a cake or cupcakes by making your own the night before the shower. You’re no Betty Crocker?  No problem!  Simply pick up the mommy-to-be’s favorite box of cake mix and substitute whole milk (or even buttermilk) for water and you’ll have the moistest cake ever.  When it’s time to frost, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar into your room-temperature jar of frosting for easy to spread frosting with a professional look.

Buffet resized 600

No matter what theme you pick or decorations you use, remember to always keep the mommy-to-be and her favorite things in mind.  If she loves popcorn, create your own popcorn bar.  You can even give guests an adorable pink lunch bag to make their own popcorn mix favor.

Most importantly, have fun with it and you’ll have a fabulous baby shower!  For even more great tips for throwing your next baby shower, visit www.CluelessChick.com

Healthy Foot Development in the Early Years: A Guest Blogpost from Angela Edgeworth of pediped® Footwear

We at MAM are 100% committed to giving your baby the best start in life possible: it's why we work with pediatricians, pediatric dentists, developmental psychologists, speech pathologists, and internationally-renowned scientists in developing each of our MAM products! We love when other companies demonstrate the same type of commitment to excellence that we do, and it is why we are thrilled to introduce Angela Edgeworth of pediped® Footwear to you! She has tackled a problem that many parents are unaware of: how footwear that isn't properly developed around your baby's growing feet can impede their development and cause negative side effects that most would not imagine.

angela edgeworth photo resized 600Angela Edgeworth

Healthy foot development during a child’s early years is essential. Proper foot care can prevent foot problems down the road and help to ensure a lifetime of healthy feet. When your child first begins to walk, providing proper foot protection while enabling maximum movement is important for his or her foot development. “70% of foot problems come from wearing the wrong footwear or ill-fitting shoes,” says Angela Edgeworth, president and co-founder of pediped® Footwear. “New shoes should never need to be ‘broken in’.  It means either they were not properly designed or not properly fitted for your child’s foot.”

The soft and flexible soles of pediped® Footwear mimic barefoot walking. Going barefoot is one of the best ways for your child to learn to walk properly. When the weather or circumstances don’t allow for this freedom, soft-sole shoes are the next best thing. “Soft, flexible shoes allow a child’s gait to develop naturally,” says Edgeworth. “Going barefoot or wearing soft soles also help the foot grow normally and develop its musculature and strength, as well as the grasping action of the toes.” Choosing shoes that are extremely lightweight and flexible to prevent your child from changing their stride or way of walking is the best option for maintaining healthy foot development.

 What you need to know:

1. Critical foot development takes place from infancy into toddler years

2. Bones in a baby's foot are made of cartilage and abnormal pressure can easily damage them

3. Children's feet grow in spurts and often require new shoes every 3 to 4 months

Tips for a Proper Fit:

1. Fully adjustable fastenings that allow for an individual fit

2. A flexible shoe that bends at the ball of the foot

3. Soft materials and breathable uppers- like leather or canvas

Caution: Things to Avoid:

1. Synthetic or man-made materials that aren't breathable- like plastic

2. Rigid or stiff materials that aren't flexible

3. Heavy shoes- choose shoes that are lightweight
